  4. They were once so prolific that they covered the bottom of the sea like a field of wheat, discs from their stalks preserved as fossils for future foragers to find. Now, their modern relatives are some of the most abundant animals seen by 's ROVs in the Monterey Canyon!

  5. It's ! These fascinating fossils are a far crinoid from being extinct. Crinoids, also known as feather stars and sea lilies, are basically upside-down sea stars with stems.

  11. This here is a flashback to young penguin Monty receiving some allopreening from the Aviculture staff during his molt out of his newly-hatched chick floof. It can be a very itchy time for a young bird, and this preening helps build comfort with his caretakers. Here's Monty now:

  19. Another quick animal curio PSA: As with nautiluses, a huge issue for seahorses populations worldwide is the souvenir trade of their "shell." So if you see a seahorse dried, that means it died—as a matter of course, don't buy that seahorse!

  20. Seahorses are a little fishy to be sure! Their upright posture, long faces and bony armor give them that classic equestrian flair. To find the pisces within, remember that their "ear flaps" are truly their pectoral fins, while dorsal and anal fins help prance about the OK Coral.
